Your pupils can take part in various structured activities that are linked to the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4. For example, our Road Safety event links to the PSHE and Citizenship curricula at KS1 and 2 - 'developing a healthy, safer lifestyle' and also covers two of the five outcomes from the Government's Every Child Matters agenda - 'stay safe' and 'enjoy and achieve'.

Road Safety:
Suitable for KS 1 and 2, this fun, interactive presentation explores the Green Cross Code. Younger children are encouraged, perhaps for the first time, to consider situations such as crossing the road safely and using a road with no footpath. Older children will benefit from the opportunity to consolidate their road safety knowledge.Visit www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk
Key Stages 3 & 4
Rollercoasters and Relativity:
Our Rollercoasters and Relativity talk begins with some ride terminology discussing different rollercoaster elements, like a loop or zero-G roll. We then move onto gravity and how it affects the riders. Positive and negative G-forces are discussed along with their effects on the human body. Speed is the next subject, where we discuss how different circumstances affect how the rides run. With a short look on terminal velocity, the talk moves into acceleration and different types of energy and friction. The last subject we look at is the difference between centrifugal and centripetal forces and how they are used on the Enterprise.
The Alton Towers Resort as a Business:
Our business presentation begins with a history of the Resort and how it has changed hands over the past 20 years. After discussing the elements that make up our Resort, we cover our brand positioning and company values. After a short section on how we utilise profits, the talk concludes with our organisational structure and our business aims.
Marketing:
We start the talk with an introduction to each element of our Resort, including both hotels, the Waterpark and Spa. The focus is then moved to advertising and promotion, the objectives of the Marketing dept and our brand vision. We also show two advertisements to demonstrate how marketing can be changed to meet specific needs. After some market research and our latest advertisement, we conclude with the 4 Ps – Price, Promotion, Place and Product.
Customer Service:
The Customer Service talk discusses the importance of excellent customer service, both to external and internal customers. We talk about the tangible and intangible aspects of the product, the type of feedback we get, and what we can do when there is a breakdown in service. Team motivators are included and our talk ends with a look at the Merlin Entertainments Vision & Values.
Health & Safety:
Here we discuss the Alton Towers Resort’s Health and Safety Policy and Regulations. We also go on to talk about our Security operation, the First Aid centre, and the needs of disabled guests and their carers. The focus then changes to the rides and how the Alton Towers Resort ensures the safety and wellbeing of its guests.
Human Resources:
In the Human Resources talk, we discuss planning, recruitment and selection of fixed-term and permanent employees, as well as current legislation relating to Human Resources. We discuss performance management, training and development and describe employee benefits. The presentation concludes with a look at two organisational structures from around the business.
ICT:
Subjects covered include call handling, the admissions system and communication on the park. We then move on to the rides and how computers control attractions from simple flat rides to large rollercoasters. We also look briefly at how IT is used by various departments such as Retail, Finance and Administration, and discuss its role in market research, advertising and promotion. The last section of the presentation looks at market research and how it helps our business.
Main Departments:
The Main Departments lecture focuses on some of the key departments here at the Resort and their responsibilities, including the Rides, Finance, Welcome, the Hotels, Waterpark and HR. The main responsibilities of HR are discussed in more detail; we conclude with a look at employee benefits and a brief overview of our Commercial Partners.
Design & Technology: Structure and Design:
In this presentation, we discuss the planning process, the use of focus groups and market research. We then look at how the location and design of a ride fits operational and commercial needs, particularly with regard to theming. We go on to explain how the rides at the Alton Towers Resort demonstrate forces acting on structures, motion & mechanisms and systems & controls with an in-depth look at Rita – Queen of Speed.
Design & Technology: Systems and Controls:
We begin the talk with a look at PLCs and how they are used on the rides, together with fail-safe mechanisms. The talk displays examples on how systems are used on various rides from simple flat rides to complex rollercoasters. With an in-depth look at Rita – Queen of Speed, we move on to how the rides operate and the responsibilities involved. After a look at ride sensors and animatronics, the talk concludes with a discussion on ride containment.
