    BusThis summer, 5 towns and cities across the UK were chosen for a very special event... the Alton Towers Fantastical Express turned up to whisk away some lucky winners to a fantastical escape!

    We visited Milton Keynes, Chester, Todmorden, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Wolverhampton! 

    How we chose the destinations

    We asked you to nominate towns and cities on our Facebook page, and you responded in your thousands! Thank you for everyone who took part.

    Fantastical facts!

    • We covered 1,240 miles around the UK – the same distance as Alton Towers Resort to Paris!
    • The Fantastical Express drove for 36 hours – in this time Nemesis could fly around the twisted track an amazing 1300 times!
    • 225 people climbed aboard – enough guests to fill the Ice Age 4D Cinema!
    • Over 15,000 nominations were received through Facebook and Twitter!

    The town of Milton Keynes was the second destination for the Fantastical Express! 44 lucky ticket holders - our eleven competition winners and their guests - all gathered at 8.00am in Milton Keynes. The Fantastical Express then appeared to whisk them to the fantastical Alton Towers Resort, for a day of fun and thrills!

    All about Milton Keynes

    • Milton Keynes has a population of around two hundred and fifty thousand, and lies approximately 105 miles from Alton Towers Resort.
    • The roads in Milton Keynes are laid out in a grid system, based on 1 kilometre squares!
    • The Enigma code was cracked in Bletchley, near Milton Keynes, during the Second World War.
    • Team GB Olympic long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford is a resident of Milton Keynes.

    The city of Chester was the fourth destination for the Fantastical Express! 44 lucky ticket holders - our eleven competition winners and their guests - all gathered at 8.30am in Chester. The Fantastical Express then appeared to whisk them to the fantastical Alton Towers Resort, for a day of fun and thrills!

    All about Chester

    • Chester has a population of around eighty thousand, and lies approximately 55 miles from Alton Towers Resort.
    • The city was founded as a Roman fort back in the year 79AD. Many of the city's Roman walls and remains can still be seen!
    • Chester is famous for its unique Victorian "Rows" of shops on two levels.
    • James Bond was born in Chester! Daniel Craig was born in the city in 1968.

    The West Yorkshire town of Todmorden was the second destination for the Fantastical Express! 44 lucky ticket holders - our eleven competition winners and their guests - all gathered at 8.15am in Todmorden. The Fantastical Express then appeared to whisk them to the fantastical Alton Towers Resort, for a day of fun and thrills!

    • Todmorden has a population of around fifteen thousand, and lies approximately 65 miles from Alton Towers Resort.
    • The River Calder, the historic county boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire, runs through the centre of the town.
    • Two Nobel Prize winners have been born in Todmorden!
    • The town has been the filming location for such well known TV shows as Juliet Bravo and Life on Mars.

    The Leicestershire market town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch was the second destination for the Fantastical Express! 44 lucky ticket holders - our eleven competition winners and their guests - all gathered at 8.30am in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The Fantastical Express then appeared to whisk them to the fantastical Alton Towers Resort, for a day of fun and thrills!

    All about Ashby-de-la-Zouch

    • Ashby-de-la-Zouch has a population of around thirteen thousand, and lies approximately 35 miles from Alton Towers Resort.
    • The town's French sounding name comes from Norman times - after the Norman conquest of England, the town became a possession of the La Zouche family during the reign of Henry III.
    • The famous fictional character Adrian Mole lives in Ashby-de-la-Zouch!
    • The town is home to the impressive Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle, which dates back to the 12th century.

    • Wolverhampton has a population of around two hundred and fifty thousand, and lies approximately 50 miles from Alton Towers Resort.
    • The city is named after King Wulfhere, who established an abbey in the area in 659 AD.
    • People from Wolverhampton refer to themselves as "Yam-Yams"!
    • The city was the first place in the UK to have a set of traffic lights, in 1927.
    • Wolverhampton was granted city status in 2000, as part of the millennium celebrations.
